Self-propelled aerial work platforms include scissor lift type, articulated boom type, straight boom type, mast type and spider type. The specification parameters of each model are countless. Only by distinguishing the differences of each type can you better rent or purchase a satisfactory product. This article in CNS makes a simple distinction around these five models.

Only by distinguishing the differences of each type can you better rent or purchase a satisfactory product. This article in CNS makes a simple distinction around these five models.
1. Self-scissor lifting platform
It includes multiple sets of booms installed on a specially designed self-propelled chassis, with each set forming an X shape.
As the scissor boom opens and closes, the working bucket installed at the top of the topmost boom assembly moves vertically.
All functions of the equipment are powered by the battery or the on-board diesel engine and controlled by a sealed hydraulic system, which includes safety protection brakes and key hydraulic cylinder protection functions.
The functions that the operator can perform include: lifting platform, telescopic platform expansion device (if installed), and control of the chassis.
2. Self-propelled straight boom aerial work platforms
It includes a set of telescopic arms. One end is connected to the operator's work platform, and the other end is connected to the turntable installed on a specially designed self-propelled chassis.
All functions of the equipment are powered by the on-board diesel engine and controlled by a sealed hydraulic system, which includes safety protection brakes and key hydraulic cylinder protection functions.
The operator's executable functions include: positioning the boom within an arc range of -21 degrees to +75 degrees from the horizontal direction, extending and retracting the boom, rotating the turntable 360 degrees, and driving the steering chassis.
3. Self-propelled Articulated boom Lifting Platform
It includes multiple large arms (with the option of independent extension and retraction), which perform lifting and obstagle-crossing functions through articulated connection.
The working bucket is connected to the upper end or the main boom, while the lower end (sometimes also called the ascending boom or tower boom) is connected to the turntable installed on a specially designed self-propelled chassis.
The operator's executable functions include: independently positioning the upper/lower boom, telescopic boom, 360-degree rotating turntable and driving the steering chassis within a wide range.
4. Vertical mast Aerial Work Platforms
Including multi-section aluminum or steel upright mast columns installed on a compact frame.
This lifting platform includes two basic configurations: manual push type and self-propelled device. They are all powered by on-board batteries (with integrated chargers) or AC power sources (on some models of manual pusher devices).
Before the outriggers or brakes are set, the safety interlock function can prevent the lifting of the push-type aerial work platform. The lifting function is controlled by the operator in the platform. Even if power is lost, an independent manual descent valve at ground height can still control the platform to descend.
5. Spider-type Aerial Work Platforms
It is named for its four legs, which look like spiders when placed on the ground, including multiple large arms installed on a compact frame. These large arms perform lifting and obstacle-crossing functions through articulation.
With its low weight and rubber tracks, it can easily reach various operation sites. The model can be equipped with a standard AC power supply, a gas or diesel engine, or an optional lithium-ion electrical system that does not produce any emissions.
Before the outriggers are set, the safety interlock function can prevent the lifting of the push-type lifting platform. The upper operation console can be removed and connected to the machine body for operation.
